I grew up in a city that didn't offer a lot of opportunities, and positive role models were hard to come by. That's why I greatly value the ones who taught me about my heritage. I found strength and courage in knowing the history of those who came before me. "Time brings change," my grandmother would say, and I often wondered at its meaning. 

 

If those from yesterday were able to persevere and succeed in spite of all of their hardships, then I could persevere and succeed today. I now understand what Grandma meant and I’m determined to be a part of the positive change in this world.
